Demiurgo
Project leader: JBCVCSIC (PI: Juli Caujapé Castells)
Stakeholders: Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias (ITC), Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Universidade dos Açores en Ponta Delgada (UA).
Funding agency: Proyectos de Cooperación Transnacional Madeira-Açores-Canarias (85%). Each stakeholder co-funds 15% of the work packages where it participates.
Time span: 2010-2012
Summary: In part of our activities, we team up with the ITC and five more Canarian institutions to create Demiurge, a public web database to (i) host and disseminate genetic diversity digests (i.e., geo-referenced genotype matrices plus relevant ancillary information) for any living organism, and (ii) allow an efficient use of all existing knowledge that resides in genotype matrices derived from any molecular population genetic technique (save for DNA sequences, so far) with the help of the newly created software Transformer-4. Furthermore, we generate and test microsatellite libraries (in coordination with the ULPGC and UA) to set the stage for future population genetic research in some plant genera of our interest. Another Department in the JBCVCSIC (threatened fora & databases, led by Mr. José Naranjo-Suárez) is commited with the updating of biological non-genetic databases about the Canarian flora resident in the institution, also following GBIF standards of data interchange and structure.
