Sample management policy

Given the commitment of the JBCVCSIC with a holistic approach to understand and conserve the Canarian Flora, and the number of research projects under way at the centre, we have to restrain the number of DNA samples publicly available. Our sample management policy is as follows:

When enquiries do not exceed three samples that are not part of our ongoing research, we send the requested DNAs for free, in aliquots of 20 µl (purified DNA) or 40 µl (without purification) in tightly parafilm-sealed screw-cap tubes, at room temperature.

When more than three samples are requested or the corresponding taxa are being researched by our centre, either we do not send them, or we seek the establishment of an official scientific collaboration with the requesting group/scientists, especially if they use methods different to those which we apply. In our experience, the latter option is most of the times more rewarding scientifically, and paves the way to meaningful multi-disciplinary approaches to understanding biodiversity.

In all cases, DNA samples deposited by a given researcher/group/institution are kept as a trust fund, so they are always available without restriction for the persons who isolated the genetic material. These samples can however be used for investigation purposes by researchers at the JBCVCSIC.
